Standish Humane Society

"Speaking for those that can't"

Standish Humane Society was founded in Duxbury in 1969 to address humane issues and sheltering of homeless animals. We became involved in spay/neuter programs, actively addressing pet overpopulation problems.

SHS Holmes House provides a warm, loving, home-like environment for cats. It is run by 4 part-time employees, a hands-on Board of Directors, and just over 90 volunteers. It is a no-kill shelter. Adult cats are housed in the shelter; pregnant mothers and kittens are housed in private homes. There are approximately 60 cats in the shelter at any given time. In 2010 we placed more than 300 cats in very carefully screened "forever homes".
Spay/Neuter Program: Surgeries and basic immunizations are done through area veterinarians, the Stop Clinic and Spay Waggin' (ARL); SHS subsidizes costs as necessary. The purpose of the program is to help reduce pet over-population It serves our shelter animals, pets of families needing financial assistance and some local pound animals. In 2010 we spent $50,000 on this program.
